Lean in Newspaper Production

Lean Manufacturing is enterprise
strategy for better business model. ). Lean primarily focus to eliminate the
waste by optimizing the process to improve efficiency and reduce lead time.  Toyota defined three types of wastes muda
means waste, muri mean overburden and,
mura and muri unevenness. Muda
is human activity which used resources and does not directly add value. The muda is the variation in output. In
Toyota, Taiichi Ohno came up with seven types of muda. Later, Lean Thinking by Womack and Jones
came up with an eighth waste. Lean manufacturing convert muda into value
(Womack & Jones, 2003). Lean manufacturing creates value and eliminate the non-value-added
activities which is known as waste in Lean Manufacturing.


Newspapers are printed in mass
production which required machine setup; changeover and maintenance time and
produce different waste. The Lean waste in the newspaper production are rework,
defects, waiting for stock, long changeovers time, waiting for work-in-progress,
stocking, downtime, excessive motion of human or equipment, inspections,
overproduction, non-utilization of  resources. Reducing the changeover times
reduces the printing of bad copies, downtime time and unutilized resources. Productive
maintenance decrease setup time and changeover time helps newspaper printing
production without mechanical failure. The reducing in setup and changeover
time improves the printer efficiency by printing in smaller batch.  


The implementation of 5S in a
newspaper printing is to focus a visual management. The 5S short, set in order,
shine, standardize and sustain is systematic method to clean, organize and make
process visible. Sustainable practice of 5S continuously reduces the excessive
use of space and motion by employees or machine.  The sustainable printing also eliminates the
waste from process by using less resource. Thus, increase in productivity and
efficiency in employees which result in quality print products.


The Single Minute Exchange of Die (S.M.E.D.) is a method where equipment can be changed from one
product to the next in the most effective way and shortest time. SMED reduce
the changeover and setup time on the press which increase efficiency of equipment
and produce better quality product by eliminating the blurred image and color variation
in the process. It minimizes the waste of waiting, downtime, high
inventories due to big batch size.
